A Guide to the Holy Sites Around Makkah

Hira Cave, Mount Thawr and the holy sites — what to see, how long it takes, and how to plan the route.

7 min read

After completing the rites, many pilgrims want to visit the historic and religious sites around Makkah. This is a practical guide to the locations, the route and how long it takes.

The sites we cover Hira Cave on Jabal al-Nour, where revelation first came. The climb to the cave itself is demanding and time-consuming; many visitors are content to view it from below.

Mount Thawr, where the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr sheltered during the migration.

Al Hudaybiyyah Mosque, the site of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah on the Jeddah road.

Al Bay'ah Mosque beside the Jamarat, the site of the Pledge of Aqabah.

Then the holy sites: Al Mash'ar Al Haram in Muzdalifah, Mount Arafat, Namirah Mosque, Al Khaif Mosque in Mina, and the Jamarat Bridge.

How long the route takes The full circuit needs three to five hours depending on how long you stop at each site and on traffic. It can be shortened or reordered to fit your time.

The best time to set out After Fajr or after Asr. Midday is severely hot, especially at exposed sites like Mount Arafat, and the roads are calmer at both those times.

What to bring Enough water, comfortable walking shoes, a hat or shade, and a charged phone. The sites are spread out and involve more walking than most visitors expect.

How we arrange it The car and driver stay with you for the whole route — no waiting and no hunting for transport between sites. Fares start at 200 SAR in a Camry and go up to 400 SAR in a GMC Yukon, and the itinerary can be adjusted before or during the trip.

An important note Visiting these places is for reflection and learning the history; it is not part of the rites of Umrah and has no bearing on their validity.
