Taif is the nearby escape for visitors to Makkah. The climate is cooler, the highlands are green, and the road there is part of the appeal.
The road The ascent runs over the Al Hada escarpment, a winding mountain road with wide views. The distance from Makkah is about 90 km, but the climb makes the trip take roughly an hour and a half.
What you see The Al Hada area with its views over the mountains, the higher and cooler Al Shafa highlands, and the Taif rose farms and perfume workshops — especially during the rose season.
The Taif cable car and the historic Souq Okaz can be added if time allows.
The best time The rose season in spring is the most beautiful, but Taif stays pleasant all summer compared with Makkah. Avoid stacking it onto the same day as a long journey — the trip needs a full day and decent energy.
Practical tips Set out early and bring warmer clothes than you expect; the temperature difference is noticeable. Anyone prone to motion sickness should sit in the front because of the switchbacks on the escarpment.
For families If you are a family or a group with luggage, choose the Staria or Hiace. It is a long day and the extra space matters.
